Hixson High School Summer Reading 2022 


Things to keep in mind:

  1. If a student is taking a regular English class (not honors or AP) they will read two (2) books, one from the school-wide section and one from the student choice section.
  2. If a student is taking an honors English class, please see the directions under the honors section.
  3. If a student is taking an AP English class, please see the directions under the AP section. 
  4. All book titles are linked to a book review.
  5. Students may only do one of each project for the school-wide and student choice books. They cannot do the same project for both.   
  6. Students may choose to listen to the audiobook through Audible, Youtube, the Chattanooga Library, or other platforms instead of reading the physical book.
  7. Students may also choose to read the book in another language if English is not their first language.

School-Wide (ALL students): Choose one of the following two books to read and complete one of the projects to turn in at the beginning of the school year to your English teacher. There will also be contests in art and writing to participate in for prizes. 

  • Farewell to Manzanar by James D. Houston and Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston 208 pages $8.99 on Amazon / available for check-out from our school library and the Chattanooga Library (book and e-book available)

Student Choice (ALL students): Choose one book of your liking to read for fun, and complete one of the projects to turn in at the beginning of the school year to your English teacher. Please choose a book that is close to your reading level.  If you are having trouble finding a book, you can Google list of books for teenagers and find a plethora of books to choose from!


Honors Classes: Honors courses will substantially exceed the content standards, learning expectations, and performance indicators approved by the State Board of Education. (Tennessee State Board of Education Policy 3.301)  Students must complete one of the school-wide selections, one book of student choice, and the following for their corresponding grade level honors course (3 total). 

  • 9th:  
    • Complete the school-wide and student choice readings and projects.
    • Lord of the Flies (This will be tied into lessons in class at the beginning of school.)
  • 10th: Complete the school-wide and student choice readings and projects.
    • Fahrenheit 451 (A project will be given at the beginning of school.)

    11th:
    • Complete the school-wide and student choice readings and projects.
    • Into the Wild (A project will be given at the beginning of school.)



AP classes: These selections are non-negotiable per the College Board. Students must complete the following:

**Per HCS Board Policy 4.403, individual parents have the right to request that their child “not have to use a given instructional material without being penalized academically.”  For this reason, parents may choose another book of their choice on grade-level for their child to read and complete a project. This does not apply to AP courses, as they are governed by the College Board.
